New Hair!

Featured Image: The Legend of Billie Jean

Or no hair, as it were.

A Little History
I was a diehard tomboy as a kid, insisting that my curly hair stayed super-short and non-girly. Mom tried to sneak the Dorothy Hamill cut in one year, and I hated it so much I cried until she de-girled it. Girly hair got in the way of tree climbing, obstacle course building, and toy gun toting, so it was no bueno. I had priorities, jeez.

Then I hit junior high, where I found heavy metal and boys. In the spring of 1984, after a year of awkwarding my way through school, I started to let my hair grow out because it fit my new priorities. By 1989 it had reached my waist, and I left it that long until, oh, 2013. Partly because I was used to it, partly because I feared change, and partly because it had become my armor.

Fast forward to today.

And Now, I’ve Lived It
Armed with my Carol picture, I went to meet my new stylist. I showed her the picture and explained what I wanted. To my surprise, she said I have the face for that cut and it would look great on me. Thirty minutes and several pounds of hair later, here I am.

Front! Holy crap, I have a face!

Side! Note the cute pointy sideburns.

Back! So buzzed.

Yeah, it’s a bit different from what I envisioned. She told me I’ll need to train my hair to get the Carol effect, and it will need to grow out a little from where it is now. I’m totally okay with that. She said it will grow fast after this first big cut, and I think experimenting with it will be fun anyway.

So is it exactly like the picture? No.
Do I look like a dude? Maybe.
Do I still love it? Yes.

I feel like I’ve come full circle to my little tomboy roots. And I’ve already found other advantages!

  • I can now wash my hair in 20 seconds or less.
  • I can now dry my hair in 40 seconds or less.
  • I can run my fingers through my hair and not mess it up.
  • Hat hair is a thing of the past.
  • Strong winds are no longer my enemy.
  • I can ride in the car with the windows down.
  • With a little mousse I could go to costume parties as Billie Jean Davy (see featured image above).

I’ll probably need to add another pillow to make up for the loss of cranial cushioning at night, but that trade-off is acceptable.

Now we just need to see what the bedhead looks like. I can’t wait.

    1. Crabby, welcome back! I hope your trip was great!

Nobody has sirred me yet, but I agree the convenience is so worth it. I’m still figuring out how to fix my short hair and enjoying the sensation of the wind not moving it. :-D
